Agriculture has a strong history, presence, and future in Shawano County
Shawano County's agriculture developed over the last century. The area was a thick stand of virgin pine forest before the loggers arrived in the mid-1800's. After logging tapered off, German and other immigrants cleared the tree stumps and boulders off the land and used the rich soil for dairy farming. Today, livestock and dairy farming is still an integral part of life on Shawano County farms.
A reflection of the importance of Wisconsin agriculture is the University of Wisconsin-Madison's
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
